Big Venues in Florence

If you want the bigger events, to see the international artists on tour, you will most likely find them playing at one of these places listed below:

Saschall-Teatro di Firenze
Lungarno A Moro 3
Tel: 055 650 4112
Website: Saschall Theatre

This is the first choice venue for many major mainstream bands, and recently packed to the gills by Morcheeba and the likes of David Gray. The upper balconies have seating, but the acoustics are besidely better in the downstairs hall.

Palasport
Via Paoli
Tel: 055 678 841
Open: 8am-8pm Mon to Fri, 8am-2pm Sat.

The big international names make tour stops at this expansive arena, and international headliners sell out fast despite a decent seating capacity of about 7,000. The majority of concerts at Palasport showcase Italian commercial pop stars such as Alex Britti and Eros Ramazzotti, but Bruce Springstreen, Elton John and Peter Gabriel have all played here. Try to avoid the area left of the stage as it has a limited view of the performers.

Sala Vanni
Piazza del Carmine 14
Oltrarno
Tel: 055 287 347
Website: Sala Vanni on line

This large warehouse-like auditorium is by far the best place in town to hear good progressive jazz, showcasing an excellent series of concerts organised by Musicus Concentus throughout the year.

Auditorium Flog
Via M.Mercati 24b
Tel: 055 487 145
Website: Auditorium Flog
Open: 10pm-late, Mon to Sat. Closed June to August.

Flog hosts concerts every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night, with Friday night dedicated to reggae and ska. On a good night, the place gets packed and you are sure to have fun, althought the acoustics are not always that brilliant. Once the nightly concerts are over, a DJ normally take over to keep the crowd dancing till late. Keep an eye out early in the week for themed dance parties and other theatrical shows as Flog keeps on expanding its repertoire. It also holds the excellent world music festival, the Rassegna Internazional Musica dei Popoli, in November.

Stazione Leopolda
Fratelli Rosselli 5
Tel: 055 263 8480

This huge disused railway station, a great haunt for catwalks, is one of the top events in Florence for big dance-scene bands. Massive Attack played their New Year Eve’s 2002 set here and Groove Armada followed with a sell-out gig in 2003. The Fabbrica Europa contemporary performing arts festival is held here every year.

Tenax
Via Pratese 46
Tel: 055 308 160
Website: Tenax
Open: 10.30pm-4am Thurs to Sat. Closed mid May- Sept

Tenax is where it is all happening. This club offers a great range of acts, from international artists as varied as Tori Amos and Radiohead to Italian rock favourites such as Ligabue and Hooverphonic. Bands touring Italy, but who are not big enough to fill the arenas, often play here. The spacious club boasts an enormous raised dancefloor and antechambers stuffed with computers, pool tables and bars. Upstairs, more bars, sofas and café style seating areas with balconies to watch the action below.

Universale
Via Pisana 77r
Tel: 055 221 122
Website: Tenax on line
Open: 7pm-3am daily

Live music sets often warm up the crowd in this stunning converted cinema. The tone can swing from progressive piano jazz, to urban funk bands, depending on the night’s DJ’s.
