Kids festivals in Florence

During February’s Carnevale, especially on Sunday’s look for children dressed up in the many piazzas and along the Lungarno Amerigo Vespucci. Other festivals aimed at children include:

La Befana or (Epiphany, 6th January) traditionally used to be the daywhen children in Italy used to get their presents, as that is when the Kings brought the presents for Jesus. The story goes that on the eve of the 6 January a poor, tattered old woman (la befana) riding a donkey (or a broom) and carrying a sack full of toys and sweets, filling the childrens stocking’s (with coal if the child had been naughty). On the same eve, the children leave biscuits and milk for the old woman.

La Rificolona is a day in September when Florentine children make or buy paper candle lanterns. Then they gather in Piazza Santissima Annunziata in San Marco or along the river. After dark, with their lanterns bobbing on the end of long bamboo poles, children parade about the place singing.
