Reintroduced in 1930, Florence’s Calcio Storico is a violent and altogether ‘zany’ version of football as we know today!! Played in traditional costume in Piazza Santa Croce, four city teams of 27 bare chested players play each other with little in the way of refereeing. The four teams represent the four city’s ancient quarters: Santa Croce, Santa Maria Novella, Santo Spirito and San Giovanni. Just before the matches they parade through the streets accompanied by costumed dignitaries. Local pride is at stake and each district cheers on its own team and colours. Join in this unique spectacle and the matches every weekend in June with the final played on June 24th, feast day of the city’s patron saint San Giovanni Battista.
