One of the best cinemas in town and definitely the best for watching original sound films. Located in one of the ‘poshest’ squares in Florence, the interior design and the architecture is stunning. The Odeon is located in the magnificent theatre of the same name, built in 1922 by the famous architect Piacentini. With excellent picture quality and both mainstream and arthouse movies, the Odeon is a meeting place for film lovers. The auditorium is decorated in Art Nouveau style, can seat 600 people and is equipped with the most up-to-date digital sound technology.

This small but very comfortable cinema offers special and art-house films that are normally missed out by the bigger cinemas. The “Festival dei Popoli” held each year in November, now a famous and well-known Florentine festival has been hosted by the Alfieri for years. This cinema is just a few metres away from Piazza della Signoria. It has one of the largest screens in Florence, as well as THX digital sound, the system invented by George Lucas for extra clear surround sound. The cinema is part of the De Laurentiis group and the program offers all the latest Italian, European, and American releases, with a good balance between box office hits and more art-house films. There is a bar inside the cinema and there are discounts for Agis card holders on Tuesdays. The showing times vary depending on the films, so it is best to call beforehand or check the times in the local papers.

This large cinema offers “first-run” films other than the mass-distribution “commercial” films, as well as independent and arthouse films, (a trait of all the cinemas in the Atelier di Firenze circuit). Another of the many Cecchi Gori cinemas. As the name suggests, this cinema originated from the old Teatro della Compagnia, now rebuilt and used as a cinema. The special arrangement of the seats makes this cinema comfortable and unique. Located between Piazza San Marco and the Duomo, this cinema offers all types of films, but the “Cecchi Gori” cinema focuses more on showing “art-house” films. As at all CG cinemas, popcorn, ice cream, and beverages can be purchased between shows at the “bar” directly in the theatre. Agis discount on Tuesday. The famous Gambrinus cinema is located in the famous Piazza della Repubblica. It has spacious stalls, a gallery and a very large screen. This cinema offers all the latest Italian, European and American releases, and still manages to offer a good balance of films. Its elegant bar is very popular. Furthermore, there are discounts for Agis card holders on Tuesdays. It is closed on Monday. The showing times vary and so it is best to phone beforehand or check the local papers.

This small, but centrally located cinema just two steps from the station and San Lorenzo, offers new releases films somewhat outside of the “commercial” mass distribution circuit as well as independent and arthouse films. Astra *

This cinema is located very close to main Train Station (Santa Maria Novella) and the Duomo and in addition to a pleasant main floor, it also has a large balcony. The Astra, like its “twin” Astra Due, offers a program focusing on the what’s new in American, European and Italian cinematography, in this way striking a balance between blockbusters and films that are a little more thought-provoking- art-house films. Agis discount are available on Tuesday. Show times vary according to the program, so it is best to consult local papers or phone the box office in advance.

Excelsior Cinehall *

The Excelsior cinema is right in the centre of Florence, just a few metres away from the Duomo and the Baptistry. It offers all the latest Italian, European, and American films, varying from light entertainment to quality films. It has a large screen with stalls and a gallery. It offers a discount for Agis card holders on Tuesdays. It is closed on Thursdays. The showing times vary depending on the films, so it is advisable to phone beforehand or check times in the local papers.
