The wonder…Apennines

Here we are again, the old year has just ended to make room for the new one, twelve months full of projects and resolutions…

We continue our travel throughout the marvellous Tuscany and I would like to begin this 2011 introducing an aspect which most of you may consider unusual, but at the same time it is getting more and more familiar to Tuscans. Maybe I should have spoken about that some weeks ago, when Tuscany was completely snow-covered, that told that Christmas was on the way in, but…unfortunately we enjoyed this magical atmosphere just for a while, since the snowfall, even if anticipated, caused several inconveniences throughout the all region.
The climate changes have caused more and more frequent snowfalls even in a tempered-climate region as Tuscany over the past few years, but… Tuscany is not anyway only seaside and sweet, flowered hills. The Tuscan Apennines have always been a popular destination for all those who like hiking, trekking and…skiing during winter season, naturally! While snowfalls are getting more and more frequent on hilly and plain areas, they have always been common on the mountains, so that several ski resorts have aroused over the past years and have become well-known tourist destinations.
Since the early 1900s, Abetone has been a popular ski area, where new and modern ski resorts and slopes have been projected and created over the years, making of it one of the most important and renowned winter and skiing tourist destination.
Situated on the mountains over Pistoia, on the border with Emilia Romagna (another region of central Italy), Abetone is a sort of natural entertainment park for all those people who love skiing and snowboarding: wide and long slopes, which can be selected on people’s skills, tracks for ski touring and XC-skiing (cross-country skiing) for all those who love instead enjoying the beautiful surrounding landscape while doing sport. The Abetone ski area is moreover considered one of the most accessible ski resort for disabled people, as regards ski lift systems, specifically equipped huts, reserved parking near the lift systems, rental ski equipment. But if you think that Abetone is just a ski destination, you’re wrong! If you love walking along woods tracks enjoying endless views, you can get your teeth into this wonderful place, where local cuisine is also an aspect you should not miss to experience…since you know, skiing goes hand in hand with tasteful food! Huts are often the core of mountain cooking traditions: a quick stop for having something to eat before returning to ski may be turned into a tasty, traditional lunch (which is wonderful but not light!). The route of wines and tastes is in fact, an historical, cultural, wine-and-food itinerary which crosses the Apennines: from Bologna (in Emilia Romagna) to Tuscany you may taste all the typical, local products surrounded by a surreal, never-ending atmosphere, where past still lives throughout traditions.
All those who love culture, instead, won’t be disappointed as well: the mountain sides are studded with middle-age hamlets, where there are several museums dedicated to preserve local history, traditions and old crafts.
Well, we’re come to the end of this trip, I think that any other comment would be needless; I only suggest all those of you who haven’t ever been to Abetone get over there, it’s really worth your while. It’s like a living representation of nature, or a cinema: each point of view offers a different panorama, if you lift your eyes, you’ll have the impression to touch the sky, that impassive and infinite space above us… Altough just for a while, even this seems possible… Do you expect more?
