Driving to Florence

As Tuscany is best explored by car, it is quite likely that many of you will be arriving to Florence by car. Florence is connected to the north and south of Italy by the Autostrada del Sole A1 toll motorway, and to the west by the A11 toll motorway.

There are several motorway exits for Florence, depending on which part of Florence you need to go to; Firenze Nord (Florence North), Firenze Signa, Firenze Certosa and Firenze Sud (Florence South).

  • The Autostrada del Sole (A1) exits: Firenze Nord, for those drivers coming from northern Italy, Bologna, Milan or Venice.
  • Firenze Signa, coming from Livorno or Pisa; Firenze Certosa and Firenze Signa, coming from Rome and from southern Italy.
  • The A11 connects Florence with the northern Tuscan coast and with Genova, crossing A1 at Firenze Nord exit. All motorway exits are located at 6-7 kms from Florence city-centre.
  • S.G.C. Fi-Pi-Li is a dual carriageway that connects Florence with Pisa and Livorno(80 kms); and to the south the Autopalio joins Florence and Siena across Chianti (70 kms).

The state roads indicated by the ‘SS’ prefix are toll-free roads that will lengthen your journey but they are often quite picturesque and nice to take if you are not in a rush.

  • The SS2 goes between Florence and Siena, and starts at the motorway A1 exit of Firenze Certosa.
  • SS 65 connects Florence and Bologna, while SS66 connects Florence and Pistoia.
  • SS67 links the city both to Pisa and to Forlì (Emilia Romagna
  • S69 connects Florence with Arezzo. SS222 reaches Siena across Greve in Chianti
  • SS302 joins Florence with Faenza (Emilia Romagna).
