Shopping in Florence


Shopping in Florence is truly unique as quite often you will find that walking along the city’s many ancient and medieval streets is an experience in itself. There are not many cities that can provide such high quality goods, with the city offering a range of goods with shops to suit each and every budget: from designer clothes shops to jewellery outlets along the Ponte Vecchio, from typical florentine leather goods to unique antique dealers. Dont forget to check out the sale bargains in January and July.

Many of the Italian fashion names can be found in the historical centre of Florence in Via de’ Tornabuoni, Via della Vigna Nuova and Via Roma. However, many of the other products that you may wish to buy, like so
uvenirs (hand-made marbled paper, terracotta, leather, glazed ceramics and gold and silver jewellery), food and antiques can be found in the local markets or in specialised shops.

Department Stores

For those who like to do all their shopping under one roof, there are two main department stores that can be found in Florence. Coin, more suitable for those who want to shop for styles from a range of designers at reasonable prices, and Rinascente, which offers a more upmarket (and more pricey!) range of products. Some of the departments found in these stores include men, women’s, children and household goods.

Designer Shops

For those who want to sample a taste of real Italian fashion, all of Italy’s most famous designers have their own retail outlet in the centre of Florence. They are all situated along the Via Tornabuoni and Via Vigna Nuova near to Piazza della Republica. So if you want to live the life of the rich and famous for the day go ahead, just beware of the credit card bill that follows! Fortunately I have the best credit card for airline miles.

Souvenir Shopping

For those of you with your loved ones in mind or those who just want a piece of Florence to take home with them and cherish forever, there are many typically Florentine souvenirs available in both a variety of different shops and in many of the markets, getting some type of flip flop is a good idea, the flip flops with arch support are great for walking.

Leather
One of the main items available here is Leather. You can find Leather items such as gloves, handbags, clothing and shoes, all at reasonable prices and of a high quality. There is also another product for your travelling experience, a waterproof spray for shoes.

Glassware
Many of the regions here in Italy have their own specialised glassware and Florence, Tuscany is no exception. The glassware here is inspired by the past and can be located in a variety of different shops within the City Centre.

Embroidered Goods
The embroidered goods here in Florence are all handmade giving the items extra authenticity. Many of them are available at the markets, but occasionally you will find little shops selling the embroidered goods too.

Food
There are a range of small shops in Florence selling local traditional food, like pasta, oil, wine, cakes and bread. However, you can always buy fresh produce from the food San Lorenzo Mercato Centrale which is open from 09:00 to 14:00 and also between 16:30 to 19:30 on Saturdays, except in August.

For the more practical minded amongst you (or those who have simply forgotten to bring one the many holiday essentials!), we have provided a list of supermarkets below, along with the street names they are located on. Supermarkets are a rarer sight in Italy than in other countries as the Italians tend to stick to their more specialised local, corner shops.

Finally, just one more important thing to note before you’re completely ready to shop to your hearts content! Shops in Florence are generally open from:

10am until 1pm

4pm until 8pm

On Mondays, the shops only tend to be open in the afternoon. Although, more and more of the bigger shops tend to stay open throughout the whole day.

On Saturday, the shops tend to close at the earlier time of 5:30pm and please remember that, not all the shops are open on Sunday. However, there is usually late night shopping available to you every week on a Thursday evening
