Dangers in the city
La Toscana: Florence
Although overall, Florence is a reasonably safe city to stay in and explore, there are a few things that you should pay particular attention to.
Pickpockets are the main threat to Tourists. The majority of them operate around the stations and on buses. This is why you will notice, when you are travelling on public transport, that there are a number of notices regarding pickpockets. The best way you can avoid any loss of items due to the pickpockets, is to keep your belongings close to you at all times. Young children carrying a piece of paper for you to read, should also be avoided, as they will tend to be after your belongings too.
Motorists in the centre of Florence are also very dangerous as they will drive fast around all the corners and down the narrow streets. It is increasingly dangerous for the pedestrian, due to the fact that a lot of the streets are too narrow for them to walk down them when a car is passing. It is for this reason, that when crossing roads or stepping into a narrow street, pedestrians should pay particular attention, especially towards smaller, unnoticable vehicules, such as the moped or motorbike.
Finally, women should be careful at night, especially when walking alone in certain areas of the city. It is advised that they stick to well lit areas where there are other people around and avoid the stations or dimly lit back streets around the city.
