This is more a German style beer hall than a traditional Florentine trattoria as it serves large hotdogs with sauerkraut, cured beef, potatoes and pickles on big wooden tables all set closely together. There’s also outside seating for when the warm weather comes.

Florence’s first vegetarian restaurant draws just as many non-vegetarians as vegetarians. The smart, modern dining room offers orange-zest ricotta-flavoured pastas and recipes from Sicily plus anything locally available that’s vegetarian of course.

This cramped and tiny but nevertheless, comfortable restaurant is always a lively place to eat at and the reasonable menu includes wholesome Florentine classics such as ribollita. Seating is communal and the service is usually prompt and efficient.

Oliviero used to be a popular hangout for the likes of Sophia Loren, Henry Bogart and Maria Callas. Even today, it continues the Dolce Vita type of atmopshere with red velvet banquette seats, pink candles and grand piano. The portions are surprisingly generous and you will be offered a complimentary glass of prosecco, plus the menu changes every two months but always features creative versions of well-loved familiar dishes.

With waiters in jackets and bow ties, the brick-vaulted, high-ceiling rooms and simple but elegant decor just doesn’t match the menu at all. The chef has his daily specials but the general menu is just the normal Tuscan dishes you’ll find elsewhere.

Contemporary paintings line the candlelit room of this intimate restaurant which serves mainly classsic dishes and Florentine specialities. However, the wine list is short and is not open for lunch during the week.

Only steps from Piazza della Repubblica, this restaurant has been around for at least a century. Complete with high ceilings and steamed linen-covered tables spread around the three dining rooms, La Posta offers a large menu with typical Tuscan treats as well as less-common offerings such as filetto alla tartara (steak tartare).

The rooftop restaurant of the Grand Hotel Baglioni is an ideal venue for lunches. During summer, the outdoor terrace provides stunning views of the cathedral and bell tower, while those from the large windows of the elegant top floor restaurant inside are equally impressive. The menus cater for a mix of Italian and international tastes, with starters including Parma ham with melon.

Angelo Sabatini’s historic restaurant was once the poet, Ugo Montale’s, favourite place to eat. The large windows reveal an elegant interior with wooden-beamed ceilings. Its specialities include the bistecca alla fiorentina, Chianina beefsteak cooked on the grill or risotto with scampi.
