May: A wonderful month for walking among the green landscape of Tuscany!

Alpi ApuaneIt’s May and Spring has arrived at last, and not just on the calendar! A pleasing, warm (but not baking) sun heats our days, which are finally getting longer. This is the ideal time to discover the beautiful landscapes of Tuscany and explore her green parks.
Moreover, the natural countryside of Tuscany is the ideal place to spend your holiday, for both seaside and mountain lovers, thanks to fascinating settings like Etruscan coast and the Tuscan-Emilian Appennines .
If you would like to visit these beautiful green landscape, you shouldn’t miss the events (they’re not solely nature-based), which will be organised on the occasion of the Tuscany Walking Festival.

The walking festival includes a variety of events that you can take a part in, from historical walking trails and photographical exhibitions to guided tours (even gastronomic or religious tours) – all held inside the six Natural Parks of Tuscany.

From mid-May to June the Tuscany Walking Festival visits the Migliarino, San Rossore, Massaciuccoli and Alpi Apuane parks.  Alpi Apuane’s massive and imposing profile, originally created by the sea, stands out steeply on the Versilia coast and then penetrates into the region of Garfagnana.
Valuable marble, of which many masterpieces have been made (such as the Michelangelo’s Pietà and sculptures by Canova and Bernini) resides right there, inside these mountains – into which both nature and man have dug, thus creating tunnels and quarries. This itinerary will appeal to both those who are keen on speleology (the scientific study of caves) as well as those for whom the steep slopes represent a climbing challenge!

If you do take part in the Tuscany Walking Festival events in May, you will have the chance to appreciate both open-air and ‘hidden’ beauty spots in the Apuane park: On May 30th guided tours entitled nel cuore della terra -  into the earth’s heart, will be organized, an itinerary that will guide you among shining stalactites, sharpened stalagmites and mountain-top lakes. If you prefer, on May 17th, a guided hike to Monte Borla will take you to discover Tuscany’s woods, traditional carbonaia’s, animals and flowers.

Walking down to the sea along the path of the Tuscany walking Festival we reach Migliarino, San Rossore and Massaciuccoli park, which extends across 24.000 ectars in the province of Pisa and Lucca (and their municipalities). If you are interested in discovering the flora and fauna of San Rossore Park far and wide, you may rent a bike, walk or just remain comfortably seated on a little touristic train or coach (to learn more about that, please visit the web site: http://www.sanrossoreincarrozza.it).

If you visit this ‘green belt’ of Tuscany during the month of May, you have the chance to take part in all the events that both Tuscan Walking Festival and San Rossore park – for celebrating its 30 th   anniversary – organize. To find out the calendar events, visit the web site  http://www.parcosanrossore.org/eventi/eventi-trentennale-del-parco.html).

Another event you shouldn’t miss in May is Terra Futura, which will take place from May 29th to 31st in Florence at Fortezza da Basso.
Celebrating its 6th anniversary, this event consists of workshops, meetings and seminars during which a variety of  environmental topics will be discussed: proposals for sustainable models of government, finance, trade and business, as well as those everyday actions for an ‘environmentally sustainable society’ – things all of us could do in our daily life to protect the eniroment and respect human rights; as Gandhi said: ‘’There is enough for everybody’s need in this world, but not enough for anybody’s greed’. It is right that India is the country that will provide one of the most important guests of Terra Futura 2009 , the well-known activist/environmentalist Vandhana Shiva.

Here’s wishing you all green holidays in Tuscany, I’m going to end this newsletter with just a sentence from Shiva:  “We can survive as a species only if we live by the rules of the biosphere. The biosphere has enough for everyone’s needs if the global economy respects the limits set by sustainability and justice.”
