One of the top 20 international marathons, Florence stages men’s and women’s events, as well as a non-competitive 10km fun-run and a special mini-run for kids. Half the course winds through the historical centre, starting at Lungarno della Zecca Vecchia near the National Library and going over the Ponte Vecchio. The race then follows a course past the Cascine Monument and the National Park, ending at Piazza Santa Croce just 200m from the starting gate in the centre of town. Surely one of the world’s most picturesque marathon routes. Perhaps the sights of the beautiful city are intended to take the runners minds off of their aching legs – maybe! Runners come from all over the world to compete and normally there can be over 6000 professional runners in the men’s marathon.
