A friendly, busy café with plenty of tables and delicious sandwiches, plus more substantial hot food and salad offerings at lunch. The seating is in alcoves so you can have a fairly peaceful meal and intimate conversations if you wish. Staff are lively and efficient, and there’s plenty of info about local clubs, music and events to be found inside.

Set on a quiet street, this is a favourite with students and businessfolk, but seating is rarely a problem outside the lunch period. It’s self-service, so prices are fairly cheap.

A peaceful, elegant café offering phenomenal desserts, notably the chocolate torte and a cheesecake served with arancia amara (bitter orange) sauce. You can always call a day in advance for a cake to take home.. There are tables outside in summer.

One of the few parlours to serve soya ice cream alongside the classic creamy concoctions, so even those with a dairy intolerance can indulge.

With some of the best pastries and cakes in town, La Loggia degli Albizi is the perfect stop-off after a hard days shopping or sightseeing; try the torta della nonna (crumbly pastry filled with baked patisserie-cream).

Vivoli is reputed to have the best icecream in Florence and is reserved for its semi freddo, creamier and softer version of icecream, and for its divine riso (rice pudding) flavour.
