Florence – San Lorenzo bars & cafés

San Lorenzo is right next to the Central Market of Florence, the largest produce market in Florence, and the site of the arts, crafts and souvenir market. After a day of shopping one of the best ways to restore your spent energy is to stop off for an appertivo in one of the varied bars in the area.

Nannini Coffee Shop
Via Borgo S Lorenzo 7r
Phone: 055 212 680
Open 7.30am-8pm daily.

This place is a perfect stop for coffee and panforte, a sticky Sienese cake. It’s owned by ex-racing driver Alessandro Nannini, who has a confectionery factory in Siena, and you can buycantuccini (almond biscuits), ricciarelli (chocoalate-covered marzipan petits fours) and hexagonal panfortes.

Porfirio Rubirosa
Viale Strozzi 38r
Phone: 055 490 965
Open 8am-2am Tue-Sun. Closed for 2 weeks August

Across from the Fortezza da Basso and overlooking the park complete with a duck pond and fountain, this chic bar was named after a Brazilian playboy. Munch on truffle mozzarella or smoked tuna salad, and sit on the balcony outside with a slice of passionfruit cheesecake at tea-time, or come back in the evening to make a night of it. This place is great no matter what time of day it is.

Rose’s
Via del Parione 26r
Phone: 055 287 090
Open 8am-1.30am Mon-Sat, 5pm-1.30am Sun (brunch 12.30-3.30pm Sat). Closed 2 weeks August

This spacious, informal bar with its sleek modern decor and smoke-free, air-conditioned atmosphere, is nearly always packed with a young crowd. Lunch offers decent pastas and salads; in the evening it’s one of the trendiest sushi bars in town.

BZF Bizzeffe Vallechi
Via Panicale 61r
Phone: 055 274 1009
Website: BZF Café
Open: noon-midnight Tues-Sun

This recently renovated 13th Century convent is home to BZF which is a bar, bookshop, internet point, live jazz venue and art space. Go for the divine pumpkin soup, flame charred tuna ‘carpaccio’ or cheeseboards served with wine chutney or honey. Or maybe you prefer the American style sweets and the choice of coffees and teas from all around the world. Sunday brunch buffet is more Sunday lunch, with pastas, roast meats and veg, and unlimited drinks. A bit pricey.
