A huge, contemporary chrome and glass bar with light flooding in from a central skylight. Perch on one of the padded bar stools for an aperitif or a freshly made veg or fruit juice, or why not linger for a lunch of smoked trout salad or steaming olive and cherry tomato pasta. Some evenings there’s jazz in the downstairs bar, while upstairs you can sip cocktails or eat a full Tuscan dinner.

Though the main eyecatching feature of this bar is its sculptural art deco light fitting, your eyes will almost certainly be drawn to the mountains of home-made ice-cream topped with cherries, berries and chocolate curls at the back. Stand at the bar for an aperitif, or get refuelled with a gorgeous artichoke and ham filled croissant after a busy morning in the museums.

Bar San Firenze

This bar in a restored 15th-century Renaissance palace has ample seating and an impressive range of dishes on offer that include chocolates, ice-creams, pizzas and three-course meals. You can also buy some cantucci (almond biscuits) to dip in Vin Santo.

Caffè Concerto Paszkowski

Founded in 1846 as a beer hall and a meeting point for artists in the second half of the 19th century, the Concerto Paszkowski was declared a national monument in 1991. With outside seating in the summer, it is able to distinguish itself from the other bars lining the square by its summer concerts, its semolina and chocolate tarts and the fact it stays open after the late night cinema closes for a quick caffeine intake.

A compact mirrored bar offering 24 home-made ice-cream flavours. Alternatively, enjoy an aperitif at the bar or sit down for a coffee and watch the whole world go by. It is also perfectly situated for after a hard days shopping.

Caffè Italiano

A hidden treasure that’s central and very popular with locals at lunchtime. The lower level is for stand-up service, the upper for those wishing to sit for a salad or pasta lunch. Dark-wooden tables, red velvet seats and mellow sounds create a sophisticate and classy atmosphere. Furthermore, regular exhibitions line the walls and there are papers and books to browse through. Coffee and desserts are superb- the ‘caffè-choc’ – espresso laced with pure bitter chocolate powder – is a must. Cappuccinos and coffee taken at the table come with a free plate of home-made biscuits.

Caffè Rivoire

The grande dame of Florentine cafés, Caffè Rivoire was founded in 1872 as a steamed chocolate factory and is still famous for its chocolates – the best in town. Its displays an impressive selection of chocolate sculptures and provides views of the Palazzo Vecchio. No trip to Florence is complete without a coffee from Rivoire’s silver filigree cups.

The window display of espresso machines, coffee cups and coffee-bean resin trays (all for sale) shows that this place is serious about coffee. At the back tables beyond the narrow bar you can have a light lunch or indulge in a slice of gateau.

Colle Bereto

Owned by the Tuscan wine producer of the same name, Colle Bereto, is a newly opened bar with a prime position. The bar has a menu as carefully chosen as its sleek decor, with a daily choice of hot ‘primi’ (starters), a fixed menu of fresh salads and snacks, and best of all, tiny fruit tarts with whipped yogurt fillings!!

Coquinarius

A lovely, vaulted bar with cushioned bench seating that offers simple, yet tasty dishes including fettucine with salmon and orange zest, big salads, crostini with pâté and spicy spreads, not forgetting the smoked fish platters. Let the chocolate fondue with fresh fruit finish it off. The bar has an exotic range of teas and speciality hot chocolate with fudge or meringues.

Gilli

Gilli’s ‘belle époque’ interior is original and its staff delightful and not to be missed are its rich hot chocolates – cacao, gianduia (hazelnut), almond, mint, orange and coffee, and an irresistible spread of spuntini (nibbles) on the bar at aperitif time. There’s outside seating also for the warmer weather.

Giubbe Rosse

This café dates back to the end of the 19th century and became a popular haunt for the intellectuals’ of Florence around the beginning of the 1900s. Though always popular with the great international literary artists, it went into decline after World War II until new management took over in 1991. Its tables on the elegant piazza are now one of Florentines’ favourite places for a bowl of pasta at lunch.

L’incontro, Savoy Hotel

An elegant brasserie-style bar in the recently restored ‘Savoy Hotel’, with pale wood and leather furnishings makes it an ideal place for lunch or drinks, especially if you manage to get one of the lovely tables outside. Watch out for the prices though!!

Home made American-style treats are this cafés speciality- indulge in a carrot cake, muffin, brownie, apple pie or cheesecake.

La Terrazza, Rinascente

The rooftop terrace of this department store café provides one of the best views over the city, with the Cupola of the Duomo being very close.

Edison’s

Edison is one of the main bookshops in Florence but has a beautiful café on the second floor. This is probably one of the only places where you can enjoy a beautiful cappuccino and a piece of the to die for chocolate cake and casually read one of their books all at the same time! The café is set literally in the middle of the bookshop and has a real genuine and friendly atmosphere with reasonable prices.
