Rome Ciampino

Rome Ciampino ‘G.B. Pastine’ International Airport (CIA)
Rome’s Ciampino airport is about 15 km to the south of Rome city centre and being a military airport it has only just begun developing its passenger terminal since the budget airline companies such as Ryanair began using it. It’s still small and there isn’t much in the way of services or entertainment but processing times are fast, and you can expect a wide range of connections from this airport to take you on to your destination.

By train:

Ferrovia dello Stato
Website: Trenitalia
Tel: 89 20 21 from fixed lines and from Italy only

After taking the bus from the airport to Ciampino train station, from there, there are regular trains leaving for Rome Termini station every 15 minutes, from where you can catch further connections to take you to your destination. For example, there are direct trains to Florence and Milan.

By bus and metro:

ATAC bus company
Website: ATAC buses
Tel: freephone 800 431 784

The bus service in Rome is operated by ATAC and run buses connecting Ciampino airport with both Ciampino station and the underground station ‘Anagnina’. Buses leave from a clearly-indicated stop just outside the terminal buildings, alongside the taxi rank, at roughly 40-50 minute intervals. The final stop is Anagnina bus station (a thirty minute journey); descend a flight of stairs from the bus stop and you’ll arrive at Anagnina metro station. From there it’s a twenty-minute ride into the centre.

Alternatively, you can take a bus from the airport to Ciampino overground train station, a ten-minute journey, and then take a train into Rome Termini, which is a further twenty minutes. A bus ticket is also valid for the city’s Metro and train services. The majority of the main buses terminate at the bus station outside Stazione Termini where you can get a map of the bus routes. Buses run from around 6am to 12am, with some services running throughout the night. Underground trains into Rome city centre depart every 5 to 10 minutes.

By coach:

A special coach service run by Terravision between Ciampino Airport and the main Stazione Termini serves Ryanair and Easyjet flights; it costs more than normal public transport, but is very handy. The coach leaves around 30 minutes after the arrival of a flight, and arrives at Via Marsala, alongside Stazione Termini, around 40 minutes later – traffic permitting. The coach leaves from the same spot for the return journey. The coach company, Terravision runs an efficient service, and you can now book tickets online . For those people travelling to London, they also operate a Stansted – London Victoria service so you can buy ‘through’ tickets covering your travel at both ends.

By taxi:

Taxis can be hailed outside the terminal buildings and a journey in to the city centre will take about 30 minutes.

By car:

Being a short distance from the Rome city ring road (GRA) and from the main road system of the NORTH-SOUTH and EAST-WEST motorways, arriving at or leaving the airport from Rome centre is very straightforward.

For those coming from Rome: take the Via Appia Nuova in the direction of ‘Castelli Romani’
For those coming from Fiumicino airport: take the Fiumicino/Rome motorway – GRA ring road – Via Appia – Via Appia Nuova in the direction of ‘Castelli Romani’
For those coming from the motorways: take the Exit Roma Sud – GRA ring road – Via Appia Nuova in the direction of ‘Castelli Romani’
For those coming from the South of the Lazio region: take the Via Appia Nuova in the direction of Rome.

Car rental:

There are many car rental companies to choose from when you arrive at the airport. It is an idea to check if the airline you have flown with has any special links to a car rental company, as sometimes they offer discounted rates.
