Dance performances in Florence

Over the past few years, the dance scene in Florence has flourished greatly and nowadays full length classical and contemporary productions can be seen all over the city. The Maggio Danza performs primarily at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, while modern work is generally produced either by the Virgilio Sieni Dance Company, or the Florence Dance Company among others (see below). This spacious theatre is actually an ex-cinema and features a wide stage and original brick walls. One of the theatres main objectives is to promote the talents of young actors, directors and scriptwriters, to a primarily young audience, the main reason why many of the productions are specifically targeted at children. Such performances include ‘Red Riding Hood’, ‘Pinocchio’ and ‘Peter Pan’.

Teatro Goldoni
Via Santa Maria 15

The Teatro Goldoni is a little 18th century theatre in the heart of the Oltrarno, seating just 400 people. Until recently it was mainly used for classical music events but now its programme has been expanded to include some impressive dance events and performances. This scheme, run by the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, lets the theatre out, in set periods, to four dance companies during the year: the Florence Dance Cultural Centre, MaggioDanza, Compagnia Virgilio Sieni and Versilia Danza.

Nowadays, the Comunale comprises a huge auditorium, a single tier of boxes and two large amphitheatres – like semicircular galleries that can seat about 2000 people. The Piccolo Teatro of the Comunale, situated on one side of the main auditorium, is a really up-to-date “small theatre”, capable of seating about 600 spectators.

This theatre is home to the Maggio Danza and offers a whole range of dance events all throughout the year.
